Questions to put you in the right frame of mind before reading Dune.

Pretest/Discussion Questions

Your answers will be discussed in class, and will be revisited at the end of the unit. You are not required to share your answers with others, but it is encouraged for group discussion.

Section 1
1. List as many problems/concerns as you can that affect the world (be as specific as possible). Leave at least half page after each issue to answer questions 2-7

2. How did you learn about each problem? Where does your current information about it come from? Have you sought out information about this problem from other sources? If so, where? If not, why?

3. What do you think causes/caused each one?

4. Why do you think they are a global concern?

5. How do those problems impact you personally?

6. Can you think of any potential solutions to these global concerns? Are your solutions realistic?

7. What would it take for your solution to be implemented?

8. On a scale of 1-10 how hopeful are you that these problems will be solved within your lifetime? Why?

9. Do you discuss these concerns with anyone? If so, whom?

10. Do these concerns change your outlook on life, or influence your decisions about your future?

Section 2
11. List as many ways that you can think of that people can be manipulated.

12. Are you subject to manipulation? What kinds? How?

13. In what ways have you manipulated others? Why do you think it has worked on those people?
